Ambrose University celebrates diversity and welcomes the contributions, experiences and full participation of students experiencing disabilities as valued members of the community. Academic accommodations are provided to Ambrose students with disabilities in accordance with the Alberta Human Rights Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Provision of academic accommodation does not lower the academic standards of the university nor remove the need for evaluation and the need to meet essential learning outcomes.

The primary role of Accessibility Services is to serve students experiencing disabilities who request academic accommodation. By helping create an accessible learning environment that encourages full participation in academic courses, Accessibility Services ensures that each student has equitable access to educational success. Students with a disability who would like to request academic accommodation must register with Accessibility Services and will need to reactivate their registration each semester - this is to ensure proactive planning takes place, with considerations given to the barriers that exist for the student within the context of their current semester courses.  Meeting with Accessibility Services is also a requirement for students with disabilities who want to apply for funding for disability-related services.

As part of the Accessibility Services registration process, staff will meet with the student to determine an academic accommodation plan to support student success. Reasonable academic accommodation plans are tailored to the individual student, are flexible, and are determined by reviewing relevant documentation as well as considering the barriers that exist for the student within the unique environment of a post-secondary institution.  Our office will facilitate cooperation between faculty and students to ensure accommodations are implemented. 

Who is eligible?

Accommodations are available to registered students with medically documented conditions:

• Medical/Physical disabilities such as chronic health issues, head injuries, sensory disabilities (hearing, sight, etc.) and permanent and temporary mobility impairments.

• Psychological disabilities such as general anxiety disorder, PTSD, depression, bipolar, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

• Learning disabilities including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders.
