The Ambrose Library has an opening for one full-time (35hrs/wk) Library Assistant for the upcoming summer months. The contract will start July 7 (or when a suitable candidate is found) and end August 30. The weekly schedule will depend on library staffing needs and the availability of applicant(s).

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Answer queries by phone, email, and in person
  • Manage circulation workflow in processing returns, hold requests, and check outs
  • Help patrons learn and utilize the library’s resources (search for and find books, articles, etc.)
  • Maintain an atmosphere conducive to study for library patrons
  • Re-shelve returned books, shift books, shelf-read
  • Process and shelve new books, process discarded books
  • Carry out opening/closing library procedures
  • Monitor library space in the absence of full-time Library Staff
  • Assist with interlibrary loan processes
  • Work on subject-specific library guides to support first-year students
  • Assisting with collection-development activities such as investigating the library's collection to determine whether books need replacing, updating, or discarding
  • Perform any other duties as determined by Library Staff

Qualifications
  • Must meet Canada Summer Jobs eligibility:
    • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
    • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection.
    • Have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a post-secondary program.

Additionally, the successful candidate will also have many of the following attributes:

  • Education and Experience
    • Equivalent of one semester as a Library Assistant will be considered an asset
       
    • Experience in a customer service environment is preferred
       
  • Skills
    • Strong communication skills, able to convey information clearly
       
    • Able to work independently, complete tasks unsupervised, manage time efficiently, and take initiative
       
  • Personal Characteristics
    • Pays close attention to details
       
    • Able to deal with highly confidential and personal information
