Position Summary

The role of the Residence Assistant is to work with Student Life to promote an atmosphere on campus that aligns with the aims and objectives of Ambrose and thus facilitates an atmosphere conducive to the spiritual, social, emotional, physical, and intellectual well-being of our students.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitate the development of a healthy spiritual, social, emotional and physical community as a RA/leader for campus.
  • Develop relationships with the students in your pod (and other students in residence) and lead floor meetings and other community building events.
  • Meet biweekly with the RD for mentoring, further training, advice and support.
  • Meet weekly with the RA staff team for training, support and continued development.
  • Listen and respond to student concerns, making referrals to other campus resources when necessary.
  • Make referrals to the RD or other staff member when a crisis situation is beyond your capacity or responsibility to handle.
  • Oversee the ARA team through regular meetings and work to implement meaningful development and growth opportunities for your pod and floor.
  • As an RA team, lead and implement traditional and new residence events which focus on programming priorities as designated by the RD.
  • Plan and facilitate monthly residence-wide events (excluding Dec/Apr) with the RA team.
  • Clarify and hold students accountable to follow the procedures and policies of the Residence Life Community Standards.
  • Care for the Residence facilities and steward the physical space of your pod, alerting the RD to any physical damage and ensuring that a work request is submitted.
  • To be on duty as assigned by the RD (typically one weekend a month).
  • Manage the check-in, check-out, work requests, floor budget, posting of information and open pods for a pod.
  • Attend the Student Leadership Retreat in August, which focuses on team building and training.
  • Support Orientation by assisting in areas assigned by the Orientation Leader.
  • Assist students as they transition during Residence Move In and throughout Orientation.
  • Attend the January Student Leadership Retreat.
  • Attend and encourage those in your pod to attend Chapel.
  • To be on campus until Residence closes for Christmas Holiday and to return to campus the day before New Student Move In for Winter Semester.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Residence Director.

Duties and responsibilities performed within one's capabilities that do not constitute a major change may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of the supervisor either orally or in writing.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to: Residence Director

Supervision given: ARAs, Residence Students (of pod directly; Greater Residence Community indirectly)

Job Standards and Requirements
  • Evidence of Christian character and commitment
  • A recommended GPA of 2.5
  • Clear communication skills
  • Leadership potential
  • A desire to see students grow spiritually
  • Ability to relate to students and staff
  • Upper-class students in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year are recommended
  • To fulfill contract dates which run from late August to the end of April
  • A second job is allowed but should not exceed 10 hours a week
  • A full-time degree seeking undergraduate student with a maximum 16 1/2 credit load
  • Must have no other major time commitments beyond being a student and an RA.
