Position Summary

Peer tutors working for Student Academic Success will help other students develop their research and communication skills and/or subject-specific knowledge (i.e. knowledge of chemistry, Greek, statistics, philosophy, economics. etc.). Subject-specific tutors work within their own areas of academic expertise, usually supporting courses within their academic major or minor. Tutors who handle research and communication can come from any discipline but must demonstrate excellent research and communication skills. In addition, all tors will assist others with general academic and study skills.

To be eligible to serve as a peer tutor, a candidate must have completed at least 30 credits of post-secondary study and have a strong overall grade point average. Peer tutors will report to the Learning Services Coordinator(s).

Duties and Responsibilities

The peer tutor will:

  • Attend tutor training and participate in tutor meetings, as scheduled by the coordinator
  • Assist students via one-to-one tutoring sessions (drop-in and/or scheduled) or peer-assisted study sessions. Tutors may have set hours (especially when offering drop-in tutoring or leading study sessions) or may have a variable schedule, depending on both the tutor's availability and student needs. The tutor's availability is confirmed at the beginning of each term. Number of hours will depend on student demand.
  • Track student usage and satisfaction with the services provided by Student Academic Success
  • Prepare learning resources for students
  • Assist in the promotion of Student Academic Success
  • Engage in self-assessment and professional development, particularly in tutoring pedagogy 

Duties and responsibilities performed within one’s capabilities that do not constitute a major change may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of the supervisor either orally or in writing.

Job Standards and Requirements

To be eligible for this position, a candidate must:

  • be a current student at Ambrose University
  • have completed at least 30 credits of post-secondary study, including at least one term at Ambrose. Applicants who have completed 60 credits of post-secondary study will receive preference.
  • have a strong cumulative grade point average, a minimum 2.7 on a four-point scale, with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher being strongly preferred
  • provide references from an Ambrose faculty member in a relevant discipline (post-interview)
  • accept the responsibilities of community members as stated in Ambrose’s Community Standards (https://ambrose.edu/community-standards).

Subject-specific tutors should have strong grades in their disciplinary specialty. To tutor for a specific course, a tutor must have completed the course (or a more advanced course in the same area) with a grade of B+ or higher. Candidates who can support a wide range of courses (within their discipline) will receive preference.

Academic Writing tutors should have strong grades in writing-intensive courses. Candidates should have successfully completed HUM 101 - Reading and Writing for University. HUM 201 - Reading and writing in the 

Christian Intellectual Tradition would also be an asset. 

Any teaching or tutoring experience will be considered an asset.
